New "maternity homes" for the birds in Atanasovsko lake in spring

09/07/2014

During this August volunteers took part in the conservation brigade hold near the ponds for producing salt in Atanasovsko lake. The succeeded in making a platform and a huge bulk Island for birds. For 10 days over 70 boys and girls worked hard and managed to create new places for bird nesting and resting in the shallowest lake of Bourgas.
Environmentalists are confident that the island made of mud and wood which is located in one of the southern basin of Atanasovsko lake will be settled by the Terns, Black-winged Stilt, and why not other waterfowl in spring time. Their confidence comes from experiences that they have with a similar island built two years earlier on the same place. Now there are two islands that allow more birds to nest undisturbed by small predators trying to reach the eggs and their young. Now the birds will spread out to nearly 64 square meters area in the waters of the lake.
"I will never forget how once the island was completed two Common Terns landed on it. I am satisfied. It worth every lifted heavy bucket of mud, "said one of its builders." We decided to announce the official opening. Did not even have time to cut the band" says a volunteer.
Traditionally in Atanasovsko lake are built artificial platforms as well, on which Terns learn to raise their little ones. Thanks to this year's brigade the lake got one more platform in the southern part of the lagoon, very close to the town.
By spending few days on earth dikes and shafts in shallow lagoon, volunteers managed to get it cleaned up by dense weeds and now Dalmatian and Pink pelicans can stop by and relax while flying on their long road to North and Central Africa. Two protected areas near Bourgas were cleaned of waste by some of the participants in the brigade.
This year the Conservation Brigade Atanasovsko Lake was organized again by virtue of the LIFE + Programme of the EU, which funds the activities of the "Salt of Life" implemented by Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds and Black Sea Salinas AD.
